Are the COVID-19 vaccines safe for use in children?
All COVID-19 vaccines authorized in Canada are proven to be safe, effective and of high quality.
The vaccines were tested in clinical trials for children. The clinical trials found the vaccine was safe for children, just as we know it is safe in adults and adolescents. The risk of serious side effects from the vaccines is very low. Children who have underlying medical conditions are strongly recommended to stay up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations.
-There are rare cases when the vaccine should not be given to children including children who:
-have a fever, are sick with COVID-19 symptoms, currently have COVID-19 or have been instructed to self-isolate; or
-have an allergy to an ingredient in the vaccine or have had a previous severe reaction to this vaccine.
+If children are experiencing active symptoms (such as a fever) or sick with COVID-19 symptoms, currently have COVID-19, or have been instructed to self isolate, vaccination should be postponed until the acute illness has resolved and they are feeling better.

Are there any side effects from the COVID-19 vaccines in children?
Some children experience mild side effects such as red arm, tiredness, chills and muscle/joint pain. These side effects go away after a few days, and are similar to other routine childhood vaccinations. In children six months to two years of age, the most common side effects reported were irritability/crying, pain, sleepiness and loss of appetite. Serious side effects such as anaphylaxis or severe allergy are rare. Long term side effects are not expected from COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. mRNA vaccines have been studied in humans since 2013 with no known long-term effects.

-RSV
-Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of respiratory illness, particularly among infants, young children, and older adults, affecting the lungs and airways.
-RSV
-is the most common cause of bronchiolitis, a common chest infection that affects infants and toddlers. Immunization is available to help prevent serious outcomes, such as hospitalization, caused by the virus.
-Infants and High-Risk Children RSV Immunization Program
-All babies born in 2024, and children up to 24 months who are at high risk of severe illness from
-RSV
-are eligible for immunization. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) specifically recommends that infants 8 months of age or less be immunized. Immunization of infants is the recommended approach to protect them from
-RSV, however, a vaccine for pregnant individuals is also available, based on discussion with a health care provider.
-More information about this program can be found on the
-Ministry webpage
-.
-The infant and high-risk children RSV program will begin in late October- early November 2024. Babies born in hospital will be offered RSV protection prior to leaving the hospital. Parents of any babies born in 2024 before the start of the RSV season should contact their health care provider. The Well Baby Clinic will be providing RSV immunization for older babies who do not have a health care provider.
-High Risk Older Adult RSV Immunization Program
-Some high-risk adults may be eligible for a free RSV vaccine. This includes adults aged 60 years and older who are also:
-residents of long-term care homes, Elder Care Lodges, or retirement homes
-patients in hospital receiving alternate level of care (ALC) including similar settings (for example, complex continuing care, hospital transitional programs)
-patients receiving hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
-recipients of solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplants
-those experiencing homelessness
-those who identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis
-Adults aged 60 years and older who don’t qualify for the publicly funded program can still purchase the vaccine with a prescription from their family doctor or other primary care provider.

-COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility
-COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility
-COVID-19 vaccine recommendations are based on an individual's current age, health status, and COVID-19 vaccine history. Please see below for current recommendations.
-Individuals who are
-not high-risk are not recommended to receive dose(s) in the spring regardless of if dose(s) were received in the fall.
-These individuals are recommended to be vaccinated during the next annual COVID-19 vaccine program (i.e., 2025/2026) to ensure optimal protection against circulating strains.
-Only the following high-risk populations who are at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection are eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccine at this time
-:
-Adults 65 years of age and older.
-NACI recommends that those 80 years and older should receive an additional dose of vaccine while those 65 to 79 years of age may receive an additional dose of vaccine.
-Adult residents of long-term care homes and other congregate living settings for seniors.
-Individuals 6 months of age and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised (due to an underlying condition or treatment).
-Individuals 55 years and older who identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Metis and their non-Indigenous household members who are 55 years and older.
-Immunization after COVID-19 infection
-The following intervals should be observed after an infection with COVID-19:
-For those who have not started or completed a primary series, a dose should be given 8 weeks following the previous dose or test-confirmed infection for those who are not immunocompromised or 4 to 8 weeks for those who are immunocompromised. A dose can be given as soon as possible for those who have not received any doses and did not test positive for infection.
-For those who are previously vaccinated and have completed their primary series, the next dose is recommended at an interval of 6 months following the previous dose or test-confirmed infection (minimum of 3 months).
-Available Vaccines
-The
-National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI)
-recommends mRNA vaccines as the preferred vaccine type for all age groups.
-The type of mRNA vaccine you will receive depends on current inventory and your age.
-Moderna Omicron KP.2 variant: 6 months of age and older
-Pfizer BioNTech Omicron KP.2 variant: 12 years of age and older
-The updated protein subunit COVID-19 vaccine, Novavax, will not be available in Ontario for the 2024/2025 season. Individuals who are unable to receive an mRNA vaccine, should speak with their health care provider about treatment options to reduce the duration and severity of illness.

-In Ontario, COVID-19 vaccines are available to all individuals 6 months and older at no cost, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. You do not need an Ontario health card, but photo identification is required (for those aged 18 or older) to verify your name and date of birth.

-COVID-19 Vaccine
-COVID-19 vaccines authorized by Health Canada are safe, reliable, and can help protect you, your family and the community from COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccine is free for everyone in Ontario.
-To find out more information about COVID-19 vaccines visit the
-Government of Canada website
-.
-Where to get a COVID-19 vaccine
-On June 30, the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine season ends for eligible people 12 years and older. Wait until fall 2025 for your next dose, unless advised otherwise by your health care provider.
-Pharmacies and health care providers
-Many pharmacies within Waterloo Region offer COVID-19 vaccines. For more information or to find a participating pharmacy near you, please visit
-COVID-19 Pharmacy Vaccine Locations
-.
-Please note: Pharmacy vaccine administration for ages 6 months to under 5 years old may vary. Contact the pharmacy before booking an appointment.
-For information on how to receive a COVID-19 vaccine from your health care provider contact their office directly, especially if you are in a high-risk population.
-Public Health vaccination clinics for children under 5
-Public Health will offer COVID-19 vaccine clinics for children under 5 years old and who do not have an Ontario Health (OHIP) card or do not have a health care provider.
-Appointment booking will be available this fall. Please check back then.
-Frequently asked questions
-How do vaccines protect against COVID-19?
-Vaccination works by exposing our bodies to key parts of bacteria or viruses (called antigens) in a safe way so our immune system can develop an immune response. Later, if we are exposed to that same bacterium or virus, our immune system will be able to respond more quickly to:
-prevent us from getting the disease, and
-prevent us from getting seriously ill if we do get the disease.
-View this resource from the Government of Canada to learn more about COVID-19 vaccines.
-Can I get the vaccine with my health condition?
-Individuals are advised to discuss any concerns with their health care provider prior to their COVID-19 vaccination. Doctors, nurses, and vaccinators will know about the vaccine characteristics, effectiveness, and risks. For more information about COVID-19 vaccines, please refer to the
-Government of Canada
-and
-Ministry of Health
-.
-Are non-mRNA (Novavax) COVID-19 vaccines available in Ontario?
-Ontario does not have non-mRNA vaccines currently. COVID-19 vaccines are purchased for all provinces by the federal government, and although Novavax is now approved for use within Canada, no supply of this vaccine was purchased for the 2024 fall respiratory virus season. For more information visit the Government of Canada's
-Approved COVID-19 vaccines webpage
-.
-Does my child require consent before receiving the vaccine?
-There is no minimum age for giving consent under the Health Care Consent Act, 1996 of Ontario. If the individual is capable to provide informed consent, parental consent is not needed. Informed consent means that you understand what the vaccine involves, why it is recommended, and the risks and benefits of getting or not getting it.
-If an individual is under 12 years of age, they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
-Where can I learn more about COVID-19 vaccination for children?
-Visit the
-Health Canada – Vaccines for Children
-and
-Ministry of Health – COVID-19 Vaccines
-webpages to learn more.
-COVID-19 vaccine after-care
-To learn about COVID-19 vaccine after-care,
-download our after-care information sheet.
-Where can I report a vaccine received outside of Ontario?
-Waterloo Residents who need to have the COVID-19 vaccines they received outside of Ontario documented in COVaxON should complete the
-Out of Province COVID-19 Immunization Form
-. COVaxON is the provincial system used to record COVID-19 vaccinations.
-There are two instances in which doses must be recorded in a patient’s record:
-Individuals
-less than 5 years
-who have received one or more doses of a non-Health Canada approved COVID-19 vaccine must have their doses recorded. This ensures they have completed the appropriate number of doses for optimal protection.
-Individuals
-5 years of age and older
-who have received one or more doses of a non-Health Canada approved COVID-19 vaccine
-within the last 6 months
-must have their doses recorded. This will ensure subsequent doses (if needed) can be given at the appropriate interval.
-Please note:
-we will be prioritizing requests that meet the criteria outlined above. If you require your doses recorded in COVaxON for another reason (e.g. professional, educational or medical purposes) you can complete the
-Out of Province COVID-19 Immunization Form
-and we will action your request based on capacity.
-COVID-19 vaccines received in Ontario do not need to be reported. When you receive a COVID-19 immunization in Ontario it is documented in COVaxON.
-For more information visit Ontario's
-COVID-19 page
-.
-Where can I learn more about medical exemptions for the COVID-19 vaccine?
-Please refer to the
-Ministry of Health – Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
-webpage.

-COVID-19 Vaccine Program Update
-In alignment with the recent release of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) Guidance on the Use of COVID-19 Vaccines for 2025 to Summer 2026, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has directed the implementation of an annual COVID-19 vaccine program. All individuals 6 months of age and older who live, work, or attend school in Ontario are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
-COVID-19 vaccine doses will be prioritized for patients/residents, staff, and care providers in hospitals and congregate living settings, as well as other high-risk individuals as directed by the MOH. Vaccines for the general population will be available starting October 27, 2025.
-Who is Eligible
-The updated COVID-19 vaccine is now available in Ontario and is being prioritized for high-risk and priority populations. As per Ministry of Health (MOH) guidance, the eligibility criteria and vaccination prioritization are as follows:
-1. High-risk Populations Group 1
-The following individuals are at increased risk of COVID-19 disease and should receive COVID-19 vaccine dose(s) as soon as it becomes available in the fall AND should receive an
-additional dose

-Adults aged 65 to 79 years should receive COVID-19 vaccine dose(s) as soon as it becomes available in the fall AND may receive an additional dose in the spring. Certain individuals in this age group are at increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease and would benefit from doses in the fall and spring.
-2. High-risk Populations Group 2
-The following individuals are at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 exposure or severe COVID-19 disease and should receive COVID-19 vaccine dose(s) as soon as it becomes available in the fall:
-Residents in long-term care homes and other congregate living settings who are aged 17 years and under
-Pregnant individuals
-Individuals from First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities who are aged 54 years and under
-Members of underserved communities
-Health care workers and other care providers in facilities and community settings as per NACI
-3. Priority Populations
-To optimize co-administration with influenza vaccine, the following individuals, may receive COVID-19 vaccine dose(s) as soon as it becomes available in the fall:
-Children 6 months to 4 years of age
-Individuals with significant exposure to birds or mammals through interactions with birds or mammals (such as poultry, livestock, slaughterhouse and processing plant workers, wildlife officers/researchers, and veterinarians)
-4. General Population
-All individuals (6 months of age and older) who do not belong to the high-risk or priority populations described above may receive COVID-19 vaccine dose(s) in the fall, starting on October 27, 2025.
